#30: Gloria's

The Bar

Gloria's. 300 W 6th St, Austin, TX 78701

Visited 2/8/17 @ 9:30pm.

UPDATE: Gloria's has closed.

The Drink

Tres Amigos. Three tequilas (Herradura, Don Julio, Dobel) together, lime. $10.

For a lot of people, tequila is not their friend. This is usually due to typical college binge drinking memories, and the aversion remains long afterwards. I've tried to avoid being of those people, but sometimes I still have that instinctive reaction that the only thing worse than a tequila drink is two tequila drinks. Three tequilas would be the stuff of nightmares, but this was really smooth, and I would definitely prefer it to the strawberry margaritas that some others (ahem) were ordering.

The Crew

Travis, Ashley, Michael, Chris, Rome, Aaron.

Notes

I sometimes feel bad for the restaurants on this trip who have to put up with a bunch of people taking up table space solely for a single round of drinks, but what are you gonna do - we're on a mission. Gloria's is originally from the Bishop Arts district in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, although this Sixth Street location seems like it's swankier than whatever would be in Bishop Arts, which is less swanky than, well, artsy. Perhaps the Gloria's concept has morphed over time in the same way that other restaurant-turned-chains like Chuy's have. Here, an interior of theater curtains, Chihuly glass, water bubble walls, and soft purple lights makes for a fun atmosphere while you snack on their amazing savory black bean dip.
