#33: Ruth's Chris Steakhouse

The Bar

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. 107 W 6th St, Austin, TX 78701

Visited 2/10/17 @ 8:30pm.

The Drink

Old-Fashioned. Blanton's bourbon, Angostura bitters, orange. $10.

I think this was the best Old-Fashioned I've ever had, or at least it was up there. The bartender convinced me to try it with bourbon instead of rye whiskey, which was the right choice. It was smooth, sweet, and addictive: as soon as I finished it I wanted another. Blanton's itself has a fun promo gimmick, if you're the collector type. The bartender one-upped the presentation at Sophia's by not only running the peel along the glass, but by shaving the peel and setting the shavings on fire with a lighter. Absolutely A+ drink and service.

The Crew

Cristy, Louis, Aaron, Travis, Geoff.

Notes

The contrast between Athenian and Ruth's Chris could not have been more stark. I would put Ruth's Chris in my top 5 drinking experiences so far without question, and their drink might actually be #1. Some people might find it odd that a restaurant bar would be such a great place for a cocktail, but not only would they be neglecting the history of cocktails, they would underestimate the strong incentives that higher-end restaurants have to make sure that their food is accompanied by good drinks. One of our fellow patrons got sea bass, and it looked incredible, and we had a good chat about cocktail nerd-type topics like making clear ice cubes.

For the final stop of West Sixth, it was a real high point. It's not the cheapest place you'll find, but you are unquestionably getting a better product here. I'm not sure if I would recommend regularly going here, since it really doesn't have that feel of a bar as a place for a drinking session, but if you want a top-quality cocktail, don't sleep on Ruth's Chris.
